Optimism & Inspiration

By Dick O'Brien M.A.S.c

I find that a daily boost of inspiration is a necessity for anyone to remain optimistic.

Too often during the day we absorb things that deplete our energy rather than enhance it. Television, the news, rumours and negative people and events all discourage a positive attitude and tap out our spirit. Inspiration is the food of the soul and you are the one responsible to get that meal.

I am a collector of quotes, prayers, poems and sayings. I find that some people can say things in a very special way. When I read these thoughts or recall them in my mind, I find it quickly changes my attitude in a difficult moment and allows me to regain my day. Robin Sharma, a Toronto author says "A great quote contains a wealth of wisdom in a simple line." This is so true.

What are you doing to inspire yourself? Do you read any inspiring books, poems, quotes or thoughts that remind you of what is truly important in life?

I love this quote by Norman Cousens: "The real tragedy of life is not death. It is what we let die inside of us while we live."

Too many people have a life half lived filled with regret. When you start to read timeless principles of living and wisdom, you begin to see the world differently. When you incorporate these ideas into your life, you begin to act differently. Wrap you life around these books and ideas and there will be no pessimism in your life and no cynics in your future. We must act on the lessons contained with in the pages. Reading soulfully encouraging thoughts for even a few minutes a day will renew your spirit, enhance your health and anchor your life.

Developing a daily ritual of a thought for the day or taking some time for regular reading will change your life because it will influence how you think. James Allen said "As a person thinks, so they are - as they continue to think, so they remain." Optimists work hard at being positive. I recommend starting a habit or ritual of daily reading from the heroic (lives of outstanding people) or wisdom (timeless principles of living) literature. I also recommend that you record some of the gems you read as quotes or sayings. Keep them some place you can get to when you need them. I don't understand why more people do not develop this simple habit that could create so much good in their lives.

Francis Bacon said " Some books are to be tasted, others are to be swallowed and some few to be chewed and digested.

Here are a few books that I would recommend:

  • "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff", by Richard Carlson
  • "Who Will Cry When You Die", By Robin Sharma
  • "Its Always Something", By Gilda Radner
